I do not identify myself as an athlete. I’m a wife and mom with four grown kids. Decades ago I was a group fitness instructor, but besides that, my favorite form of exercise was a walk around the block. I don’t really know where the sudden inspiration came from, but in 2011, I decided to participate in a 100 mile charity bike ride. My husband, a life long runner and cyclist, insisted that I needed to amp up my fitness in order to ride 100 miles. Under his guidance, I trained for several months, until he was satisfied that I’d be able to go the distance. The ride was a success and my fitness had improved significantly. And I was ready to take on new fitness challenges.

With no experience competing, I entered three sprint triathlons in the summer of 2012. I remember looking at the open water in my first real race and saying, “I don’t belong here. This isn’t me.” A woman standing next to me whispered, “You’re here, so own it.” I did. And after that, I was hooked on the sport.

The following year, my race goals expanded and I asked Matt to help me to prepare. As the season progressed I sustained some injuries that forced me to shift my goals, but I never abandoned my commitment to improving my overall fitness. I also learned that I was capable of so much more than I ever thought possible. With Matt’s careful coaching, I have stayed injury free. My race times continued to improved. I was ready for more.

I continue to push myself outside my comfort zone in terms of a tough races. In addition to my short and mid distance triathlon and road racing schedule, I ran a demanding 10 mile trail race, (twice) finished the Seneca 7 (77.7 miles around Seneca Lake with 7 runners and 7 bikes), had a solid performance at Age Group Nationals in Milwaukee and raced two half marathons and a 70.3.

My biggest goal in 2017 is Ironman 70.3 Maine which will include my first ocean open water swim!

Now I call myself an athlete – a triathlete. More than that, I am coached by Matt, an inspiring and super-humanly-talented athlete in his own right. And I am surrounded by an amazing, supportive group of Migonis Multisport teammates.
