A Couple of 70.3’s, an Olympic Triathlon, a Surprise Sprint and the First Cross Race of the Season.

Another busy weekend of racing is in the books for several Migonis Multisport athletes.  Phil Sconzert, Ryan Meek, Chris Ogden, Michael Robertson and Amie Thomas were all in action on Sunday with some great results, great memories and epic stories.

Phil Sconzert was racing in the first Ironman 70.3 World Championship race of his triathlon career in Chattanooga, TN.  The race was on a brutally hard course that saw a great deal of climbing on the bike and the run in addition to a primarily up-river swim.  Not to mention he was racing against many of the best age-group long course athletes in the world.  Phil ended his fabulous 2017 season on a high note with his second best 70.3 time ever as he broke the tape in 5:26:42.  Phil grew a great deal this season and he set personal best times in every event he raced from the 5k to the 70.3 triathlon distance.  It was truly a remarkable season for Phil.  We can’t wait to see what he is able to do next year.  Well done Phil!

Ryan Meek was racing in upstate NY at the first annual Ironman 70.3 Lake Placid on Sunday morning.  Ryan is no stranger to Lake Placid and the course as he is a two time finisher of the Ironman Lake Placid race held in late July each year.  This race had a little different feel to it than Ironman.  For one it was shorter, but also it was a MUCH COOLER morning than Ironman has ever been.  Ryan and all the other athletes racing dealt with cold, damp temps all day which showed in the overall times.  Ryan battled the conditions and a sore knee to finish in 5:28:20 which was good enough for 148th overall out of the over 1,200 athletes that raced.  While the triathlon season is over for Ryan, he still plans to do some running races this fall and possible race another Ironman in 2018.  Great job Ryan!

Chris Ogden raced in his first Olympic Distance Triathlon at the Finger Lakes Triathlon in Canandaigua, NY Sunday morning.  Chis had been racing sprints all season and this was his first crack at a race over two hours in length.  He used a very strong swim and a solid bike and run to finish in 2:49:19 which was good enough for 5th in his age-group.  This was an excellent result for Chris who had been battling a very nasty ear infection and illness the past three weeks which hampered his training and lead-up to this race.  However he was able to use all the strength and endurance he gained the past year to race very well on Sunday.  Like Ryan, Chis is looking to run a good time in some running races this fall.  Excellent job Chis and congrats on completing your first full triathlon season in 2017!

Michael Robertson, who is one of the newest members on the Migonis Multisport team, had a very memorable day at the Vineyard Triathlon on Martha’s Vineyard.  Michael was signed-up for and started the half-ironman distance race, but with a mix-up in the swim he switched to the sprint distance race mid-way through the race.  Not something you see too often.  He took full advantage of the opportunity to race the sprint and flew through the bike and run to claim 1st place in his age-group and 9th overall in a time of 1:17:34.  It was a very unusual race experience, but it showed us how good of shape Michael is in with the age-group win.  Michael will also be doing some fall running races and dab a little in some cyclocross races too.  He plans on racing Challenge Roth next year which is an Ironman length race in Roth Germany.  Great job Michael!

Not to be outdone by the guys, Amie Thomas had a memorable race experience of her own on Sunday.  Amie raced in her first cyclocross race of the season at the Kirkland Cross event in Clinton, NY.  Amie raced through, sand, mud, and grass and even up and over stairs to come home 4th overall in the female category 4/5 race.  Not a bad finish for her first cross race of the season and for having nearly everything but the kitchen sink thrown at her during the race.  This is the first of several cross races that Amie has on the race calendar this fall.  Well done Amie!
